Nokian Tyres has been working on perfecting their winter tires for a long time, and what comes next is a real game changer for drivers dealing with unpredictable road conditions: the Hakkapeliitta 01 is the first studded tire that can adjust its studs on its own, all without the need for buttons or electronics, just a clever bit of material science that responds to temperature changes.
The engineers behind this designed the technique around a particular base layer in the tire that hardens and begins forcing the studs out when the temperature drops below freezing. This permits them to have a solid grip on the ice. Warmer air has the opposite effect, and the studs slip back in, resulting in a smoother interaction with dry or wet roadways. The transition occurs quickly enough to be useful once you reach a stretch of road that goes from snow-packed to clear asphalt in a moment.

The studs are 10.5 mm long and use the same tungsten carbide tips as the Hakkapeliitta 10. Where they are positioned on the tread is important; the center studs line up for strong acceleration and braking, while the studs on the shoulders are oriented just right for optimum steering. Each tire receives approximately 220 studs, which are secured in with additional layers to prevent them from sliding and to hold them in place when necessary.
The benefits are obvious, with up to 10% better ice traction than the Hakkapeliitta 10, 5% better grip on wet pavement, and up to 30% less road wear because the studs stay tucked away when not in use. Plus, the ride is quieter, with noise levels lowering one decibel at highway speeds, a minor but welcome improvement. The tread compound is also more eco-friendly, with a blend of natural rubber, bio-resins, and oils from pine and canola, ensuring that it is still robust while also being environmentally conscious.
Aramid fibers offer added strength to the sidewalls, where hits are common, and the tire carries both the Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake insignia (for winter tires that can really tackle the deep stuff) and the Ice Grip accreditation. Even if studded tyres are not permitted in their area, residents can still use them if they are available.
Nokian Tyres plans to launch in the key Nordic and North American regions in autumn 2026. The range is also rather vast, with 124 sizes ranging from 14 to 22 inches to accommodate almost any passenger car, crossover, or SUV, while production is still based in Nokia, Finland.
