Opera’s browsers just picked up a new AI feature that’s actually useful

Summary

  • Browser Connector connects ChatGPT and Claude to Opera browsers for direct access to pages.
  • With Browser Connector, AI agents can read open tabs and page content and take screenshots to help perform tasks with less friction.
  • The tool is available from April 16 in Early Bird for Opera One and Opera GX.

Last month, Opera announced a new MCP Connector for its Opera Neon AI browser. This tool helps your favorite AI agents, like Claude and ChatGPT, plug directly into the browser. As of April 16, a similar feature called Browser Connector is now available for Opera One and Opera GX, as well.

What is Browser Connector?

Opera’s Browser Connector uses MCP (Model Context Protocol) to connect your favorite AI tools directly to the browser. Originally developed by Anthropic, MCP is an open-source standard that helps AI agents connect with other applications. Once you’ve set up Browser Connector, ChatGPT and Claude will be able to use your browser content to answer questions and help with tasks.

Why is Browser Connector useful?

Less friction, more productivity

As it stands, while you can interact with AI like the excellent Claude and ChatGPT inside Opera One and Opera GX, they don’t have any insight into what’s going on in your browser. They can’t see your open tabs or read any of the content in them. Practically, that means if you want help with research or shopping tasks, you have to provide the agent with all the context it needs to give you a good answer. There’s a lot of friction.

With Browser Connector, the AI can see what’s going on in your browser, so that friction is eliminated. Opera says, “Your AI of choice no longer needs you to provide it with the context: it can now access and read page content, understand open tabs, and even take screenshots to analyze images or graphs.”

It’s all about choice

Ultimately, Opera says Browser Connector is about “user choice over ecosystem lock-in.” Mohamed Salah, Senior Director of Product at Opera, says, “With Browser Connector, Opera ensures users aren’t bound to a single company’s ecosystem, but are instead free to combine the best tools for their specific needs.” That’s exactly the kind of attitude I like to see.

Browser Connector is available starting April 16 in Early Bird mode for both Opera One and Opera GX. Search for “AI Services” in Settings to install the feature and connect ChatGPT or Claude.
