Huawei just released the first public beta of HarmonyOS 6, although this build still has the rough edges you’re used to. So, before you begin, make a backup of your data, clear at least 10 gigabytes of free space on your device, and verify you have a reliable Wi-Fi connection.
The Mate 70 series is leading the charge, but not alone; the Mate 60 range, the Mate X5 and X6 foldables, and the Pura 70 and 80 series are also on board. Even flip phones like the Nova Flip and Pocket 2 make an appearance, as do mid-range smartphones like the Nova 12, 13, and 14 series. To round things off, we have tablets, such as the 2023 and 2025 MatePad Pro 13.2, the 2024 MatePad 12.2, and this year’s MatePad 11 Pro. Later this month, a closed beta will be available for the more… adventurous among you, with the tri-fold Mate XT Ultimate, the MateBook Fold PC, and even the Watch 5 & GT 5 series wearable crew. In November and December, the more lightweight devices take center stage, including the Nova 14 Lite, the Enjoy 70X, several MatePad versions, and even some audio gear like the FreeBuds Pro 4 as well as FreeClip 2.

File sharing is getting a huge improvement here, and it will actually make a difference in your daily life. HarmonyOS 6 now allows you to send photos directly to an iPhone or iPad over short-range wireless, eliminating the need for wires as well as cloud storage. This is like Huawei’s AirDrop on steroids; it accomplishes everything without tying you to a specific ecosystem.
Over 80 AI agents dwell within the system, each performing tasks you’d otherwise overlook. Huawei’s own Xiaoyi assistant is at the top of the list: tell it you’re planning a vacation, and it will pull weather forecasts, propose routes, and even book a cab if you approve – all while drawing from your calendar and previous visits.

Third-party developers also contribute, such as Trip.com’s itinerary planner, which will arrange your entire weekend based on a single ambiguous instruction, or Ant Group’s health tracker, which will analyze your steps and sleep to identify patterns worth recording. Tencent responds with apps for live broadcasts and news feeds that adjust on the go, surfacing items that match your reading style.

Cross-device harmony extends further, connecting your Huawei universe in a seamless loop. Start editing a photo on the MatePad Pro, and it will continue where you left off on the MateBook Fold when you seat at your desk. Your Watch GT 5 will sync your workout data to your phone while you’re running, and then send it to the FreeBuds 6 for real-time coaching whispers.

Smart home integration is very strong: unlock the door with your phone’s proximity, and the Sound X speaker will play your music as you step in. This is not magic; it is the consequence of years of developing a single operating system to rule them all, from pocketable screens to wall-mounted displays.
