Recent leaks hint at Insta360’s next move with pocket-sized video gear. The company unexpectedly posted a pixelated preview on social media just after DJI released the Osmo Pocket 4. According to press material that has surfaced, a new device called Luna Ultra is on its way. It still fits in your pocket, as you would expect from a pocket-sized camera, but a handful of its features make it really stand out.

Sources point to a dual-lens setup with one lens for wide images and the other for optical zoom to get objects close. One lens handles wide shots while the other brings subjects closer with optical zoom. Early information pointed to three times optical zoom. Newer leaks raise that figure to six times. Footage that appeared online even shows a twelve times option in action through in-sensor cropping

The idea is that consumers can acquire the reach they require without switching to a different device or sacrificing quality. This makes it ideal for those who frequently video events or photograph nature landscapes when distance is an issue. I’ve seen several sample clips, and from what I can tell, even when the footage is a little fuzzy, the results seem amazing, with a lovely background blur and decent resolution even at long distances.
It also has a modular form factor, since the camera can be removed from the handle and gimbal and put on your clothes or other items, similar to other of Insta360’s smaller action cameras. This essentially allows you to record from a distance or perform more hands-free operations. Vloggers will appreciate this if they find themselves in confined spaces.
This pocket camera is purported to have a 1,550mAh battery, or slightly larger than that of the previous Osmo Pocket model. The charging specification allows for up to 15 volts and 3 amps, with a runtime of around 1 hour and 30 minutes to an hour and 45 minutes under normal conditions. On longer sessions, you won’t need to charge the battery as frequently. The controls are also more intuitive now. They’ve included a joystick to make precise movements easier, a few specialized buttons for recording, zooming, and switching settings, and a screen that spins around for convenient viewing no matter which direction you hold it. All of this makes capturing the shot easier when filming on the fly.

In terms of stabilization, Insta360 simply relies on tried-and-true technology to keep the footage smooth. The three-axis gimbal does its job properly. Still no word on when this thing will be released. I’ve heard a couple reports that it may be teased in mid-May or make its official debut at an industry gathering. Compared to the new Osmo Pocket 4, which just has a single lens and can achieve two times lossless zoom, the Luna Ultra appears to be aimed at power users who require a little more versatility from their pocket camera in terms of focal length and overall form factor.
