A 1992 Mazda RX-7 FD, wearing its bold orange-and-black VeilSide Fortune body kit, rolled onto the block at Bonhams’ Goodwood Festival of Speed. Driven by Sung Kang’s character Han Lue in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, it sold for £911,000—around $1.23 million—breaking records for Mazda road cars and Fast and Furious movie cars.

Universal built nine RX-7s for Tokyo Drift but only two made it through the film. This car, chassis number FD3S111461, dodged the drifting scenes and was used for stunts and static shots. VeilSide, a Japanese tuner, gave it their Fortune wide-body kit, widening it by 200mm and fitting 19-inch Andrew Premier Series Racing Evolution 5 wheels with Pirelli P Zero Nero tires. Inside it has VeilSide racing bucket seats, a shiny (but unconnected) NOS bottle and a mix of carbon fiber, aluminum, velour, vinyl and chrome trim. With 66,785 miles and a freshly rebuilt twin-rotor engine by RE-Amemiya, estimated at 280bhp this RX-7 is a showstopper and a performer. Its pristine condition, with Universal Studios’ “#71 HANS” labels and camera mount marks, adds rock solid provenance.

Bonhams had a pre-sale estimate of £250,000-£350,000 ($338,000-$473,000) which was bold but fair for a movie car with this history. On July 11, 2025 at Goodwood two collectors turned the auction into a bidding war. Bidding tripled the top estimate to hit £911,000 including buyer’s premium. It outdid a 2007 Bugatti Veyron (£1,527,000) and was only beaten by a 2023 Mercedes-AMG ONE (£2,456,600) in the auction room.

Why so much? Its role in Tokyo Drift is a big part of it. The 2006 film may not be the franchise’s best but it won over car fans by showcasing drifting and tuner culture. Han’s RX-7 with its bright VeilSide kit became an instant icon, its orange glow and stance burned into fans’ minds. This car’s unique history—it was VeilSide’s demo car for the Tokyo Auto Salon before being repainted for the film—adds to the appeal. As one of only two surviving examples it’s a collector’s dream.

Its condition sealed the deal. Unlike many movie cars that get thrashed, this RX-7 was pampered, used for close-ups and stunts, not high-speed drifting. Bonhams called it “exceptional condition” and the recent RE-Amemiya engine rebuild means it’s not just a museum piece but a road ready slice of history.
