We all come across a situation when a song doesn’t sound good enough, and we start questioning our phone’s ability. Even with my Galaxy S25 Ultra, the out-of-the-box experience is slightly lacking while listening through premium earphones and even using the phone’s speakers. I like my songs to be bass-heavy, but I also cannot overlook the treble. For my local listening, I trust PowerAmp; the equalizer changes don’t get reflected system-wide.
For the longest time, I tried tweaking the built-in Samsung equalizer to bring the audio quality to my taste, but most of the time, I was just adjusting it on a per-app basis. Enter Echo Equalizer, a completely free, system-wide app that finally puts me in control of my audio. This lightweight equalizer app is a must-have if you are an audiophile.
I didn’t expect an open-source music player to sound this good
This player made my YouTube Music bill feel unnecessary.
Echo Equalizer knows no limit
It supports both local music files and streaming services
Most equalizer apps on the Play Store come with a major catch. They either only work with local music files or they support only specific streaming apps. On top of this, such apps are most often filled with ads that appear after almost every touch. Echo Equalizer bypasses this nonsense.
The biggest highlight of this app is that the Echo Equalizer works system-wide. Meaning that changes you make to the equalizer will be applied to your local audio player, music streaming services, including Spotify and YouTube, as well. The best part is that it also applies to the voice note someone sent you on WhatsApp.
This eliminates the need to jump between apps to get the best sound quality. While I listen to music on PowerAmp, the limitation is that in order to use its equalizer, I have to download the MP3 files and then use PowerAmp to listen to the best quality. The same quality doesn’t get applied to the audio I am listening to from streaming services.
With the Echo Equalizer, this is the opposite. Once I have found the sweet spot on the 10-band equalizer, I get consistent audio quality across all apps.
Echo Equalizer is loaded with features
The best of all, it does not feature a single advertisement
Almost all free apps that claim to offer all the goodies come with a bunch of ads. Some are so intrusive that ads appear after every tap. Echo Equalizer, on the other hand, features a clean interface, inspired by Material Design, which makes it feel like it belongs natively on your phone.
The app also supports the Quick Settings tile, which you can use to quickly turn on or off the equalizer directly from the notifications panel.
However, I have to talk about one of the standout features of the Echo Equalizer, which is auto-switching. It understands and selects the exact equalizer you have set for a particular device. For instance, as soon as you enter your car and connect to Android Auto, Echo Equalizer recognizes the connection and switches from headphone settings to the custom driving preset.
I love this feature since I no longer need to touch a single slider to tune the sound quality. A bit of bass inside the car is what I prefer, and with the Echo Equalizer’s Auto-Switching feature, the music is incredible from the moment I step inside the car.
You can also use the app to tone down the harsh highs and boost the mids when listening to music that helps you focus on your work or study. Since it applies to all apps, you can switch between your personal playlist on Spotify and random lo-fi music on YouTube.
Unlike the basic 5-band equalizers, Echo offers a 12-band equalizer, which lets you control the audio quality. There are custom presets such as Rock, Pop, Jazz, EDM, Classical, Hip-Hop, Folk, and more. To feed your bass needs, the Echo Equalizer comes with a Bass Booster that is distortion-free if you keep it to a certain level. There is also a loudness enhancer that lets you ramp up the volume of a podcast or song that has low-volume audio.
Not everything is for free
Yes, the free version of the app lets you tweak the equalizer, etc., but to actually tune your phone to your audio quality taste, you have to purchase the Pro version of the Echo Equalizer app. However, the app stays completely free from ads even in the free version and is available in 10+ languages. Overall, a great equalizer app that gives you the best audio quality without ads.
