In a garage somewhere in China, a combat sim enthusiast has built a fighter jet cockpit that defies all expectations for a gaming setup. This is the real deal (or so we think): a rig that shoots flames, spews chaff and launches rockets, blurring the line between the game and reality.
At the heart of this beast is a 3-axis motion seat designed to mimic the ups and downs of a real aircraft as depicted on screen, but far superior to the static gaming chairs we all settle for. This thing tilts, pivots and shakes to simulate the entire pitch, roll and yaw of an aerial battle. You won’t have the same 360-degree flexibility as a real plane doing a loop the loop, but this is a million times more immersive than any static rig. As you play, the seat leans left / right when you’re flying a tight turn, and tilts up when you’re climbing for the skies.

The over the top special effects are what really take this build to the next level. First up are the afterburners, two nozzles on either side of the seat that shoot flames when you press the gas pedal and the throttle hits max, just like in the game. They’re powered by some kind of homemade gas tank and the “Energy Management System” label is a great touch.

It gets even crazier from there: the rig has a pneumatic cannon that fires with every in game trigger pull, giving you the feeling of a real jet’s machine gun going off. For missile launches actual fireworks are launched from a rocket pod, sending sparks and tiny projectiles flying around the area. And when you think it can’t get any wilder the rig has a chaff launcher that fires strips of aluminum when you activate countermeasures in game, just like a real jet protecting itself from missiles.

The control layout is the only thing that lets this build down. Instead of actual airplane panels, the modder has gone for custom made controls that look like a DIY setup gone wild, rather than a proper cockpit canopy. Plus, there’s just one monitor, set to the side instead of being mounted to move with the seat – a bit of a compromise but you can tell the creator isn’t giving up on their idea.
