Apple Watch SE 3 Outshines the Rest in 2025, Thanks to 15-Minute Fast Charging and S10 Chip

Apple Watch SE 3
Apple’s September event brought the usual array of new gadgets, but one device snuck up and stole the show: the Apple Watch SE 3. Priced at $249 it’s not the most flashy in the lineup—Series 11 and Ultra 3 have that honor—but it’s the one everyone’s talking about.

A big reason the SE 3 is resonating is the jump from the S8 to the S10 chip. The S10, shared with the more expensive Series 11 and Ultra 3, brings features once reserved for the high-end models. Double tap gestures let you navigate with a quick pinch of your fingers, answer calls or pause music without touching the screen. Wrist flick gestures dismiss notifications with a simple twist and blend into daily habits. On-device Siri responds faster, can set timers or log workouts without needing your iPhone nearby.

Battery life has been a sore spot for Apple Watch users and the SE 3 addresses this head on with fast charging. 15 minutes of charging gives you 8 hours of use, enough to track a full night’s sleep or get through a busy day. While 18 hours isn’t a huge jump from previous models it’s more than enough for most. Compared to the Series 11’s 24 hours or the Ultra 3’s 42, the SE 3 holds its own for the average user who doesn’t mind a quick top up.

Health tracking is where the SE 3 really shines. Apple brought features previously exclusive to higher-end models to this budget watch, making it a wellness powerhouse. Wrist temperature sensing enables retrospective ovulation tracking and richer sleep data in the Vitals app, perfect for family planning or overall health. Sleep apnea notifications, a new feature, analyze breathing patterns over 30 days to alert you to potential issues. The Sleep Score feature rates your rest based on duration, consistency and interruptions, gives you clear insights to improve your nights. These join the core features like heart rate alerts and cycle tracking, making the SE 3 a solid health companion. The SE 3 covers the basics, and then some, without the premium price.

Connectivity gets a big boost with 5G support, a first for the SE line. Faster downloads and better cellular coverage means you can stream music, take calls or use apps without your phone, even in spotty areas. The catch? Some regions, like Canada, don’t have 5G watch plans yet so check with your carrier. But this future-proofs the SE 3 so it will stay relevant as the networks evolve. Plus a speaker to play music or podcasts from the wrist and the SE 3 feels less like a stripped down option and more like a full featured smartwatch.

The SE 3’s Ion-X glass is four times more resistant to cracks than the previous one, perfect for those who bump their wrist. Available in 40mm and 44mm with midnight or starlight aluminum cases it’s sleek and tough. The always on display powered by the S10 chip is a long awaited feature that transforms the experience. No more raising your wrist to see the time or your workout stats—everything is glanceable just like the Series 11. At 1,000 nits the screen is bright enough for outdoor use, though it’s dimmer than the Series 11’s 2,000 or Ultra 3’s 3,000 nits. In practice this rarely matters unless you’re squinting in direct sunlight next to a more expensive model.

The SE 3’s software running on watchOS 26 levels the playing field even more. Features like Liquid Glass design with its vibrant animations and new watch faces like Flow and Exactograph add some flair to the experience. Smart Stack hints at actions based on your routine and a Notes app to jot down quick reminders on your wrist. If you pair the SE 3 with an iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence you get live translation in Messages and Workout Buddy which offers personalized motivation during exercise. These features aren’t exclusive to the SE 3 they’re available on older models like the Series 6 but the S10 chip makes them run smoothly so the SE 3 feels modern.

So why does the SE 3 beat the Series 11 and Ultra 3 for upgrades? It’s about price. At $249, it’s $150 less than the Series 11’s $399, and $550 less than the Ultra 3, yet it still offers health tracking, 5G as well as an always on display.
