OpenAI has launched a new ChatGPT feature that feels like a step towards a future where your digital assistant doesn’t just respond—it does your to-do list. Called ChatGPT Agent, this update lets the chatbot do the work for you, from browsing the web to creating spreadsheets.
ChatGPT Agent is like a virtual intern, working in its own digital space to tackle complex tasks. It can navigate websites, run code or whip up a slide deck for your next meeting. “It dynamically chooses the best path,” says Yash Kumar, OpenAI’s product lead for ChatGPT Agent, “filtering results, running code or generating slides while keeping the full context of the task.” Ask it to plan a Japanese breakfast for four and it will search the web for recipes, list ingredients and even guide you to buy them online—all in one flow. By combining the web-browsing power of OpenAI’s Operator tool with the analytical depth of its Deep Research feature, it becomes a flexible assistant that can switch tasks easily.

What’s new is its ability to handle multi-step requests with minimal guidance. In an OpenAI demo, an employee asked the agent to prepare for a wedding, specifying five dress-code appropriate outfits and hotels with extra days around the event. The agent didn’t just give links—it curated options, presented them clearly and suggested next steps. This is a big jump from the back-and-forth of old chatbots. Isa Fulford, OpenAI’s research lead, told a story about ordering cupcakes: “I was very specific about what I wanted and it was a lot of cupcakes. It took almost an hour but it was easier than doing it myself.”
The agent also has some cool tools, including a visual browser that mimics human actions—clicking, scrolling and filling forms—plus a text-based browser for quick data pulls, a terminal for coding and direct API access to tools like Google Drive or SharePoint. “It’s like giving ChatGPT its own computer,” says Kumar, showing how it interacts with websites or generates files like PowerPoint slides. The catch? You’ll need a ChatGPT Pro, Plus or Team subscription, with Pro users getting 400 messages per month and others getting 40, with options to buy more.
