Florida Highway Patrol Adds Ford Mustang GT to Fleet, Complete with State Trooper Livery

Florida’s highways, long and flat like a dragstrip, have a new cop on the beat. The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) has added a Ford Mustang GT to its fleet, a car that’s as much about raw speed as it is about turning heads while keeping speeders in check.

This Mustang GT didn’t roll off the assembly line as a police car—Ford doesn’t make a ready-to-go version for law enforcement. Instead, the FHP built it themselves, slapping on flashing emergency lights, a bold black-and-tan paint job and the iconic FHP logo. They’re not saying what’s under the hood but the stock Mustang GT is no slouch. It’s 5.0-liter V8 pumps out 480 horsepower, goes 0-60 in about 4.3 seconds and tops out over 155 mph. It’s fast enough to catch almost anything on Florida’s roads. An FHP spokesperson said on social media the car “will be used to support the Florida Highway Patrol’s mission of keeping our roadways and highways safe.” That mission, clearly, comes with a side of flair.

The Mustang’s look is half the story. It joins a flashy FHP fleet that already includes a Dodge Challenger and a Chevrolet Corvette, cars that don’t exactly blend in. Unlike plain unmarked sedans, this Mustang stands out with its shiny black body and tan stripes, echoing the FHP’s classic black-and-tan style seen before on their seized 2023 Corvette Stingray. “The Corvette was seized by the Florida Highway Patrol, in partnership with the Drug Enforcement Administration Task Force,” the FHP posted on Facebook.

This Mustang isn’t just about catching bad guys—it’s also about winning fans. The FHP loves to show off its rides in the American Association of State Troopers’ “Best Looking Cruiser” contest where they won the 2024 award with a Challenger posed against a rocket launch at Cape Canaveral. Now the Mustang GT is in the running, with its sleek design front and center. “Florida Highway Patrol reintroduces the marked 5.0 Ford Mustang for the 1st time in 30 years,” outlets like Motor Biscuit noted.Inside the Mustang GT is practical. The standard version has a big 13.2-inch touchscreen, comfortable seats and a driver-friendly layout but the FHP’s version likely sacrifices some of that for police gear—radios, laptops and mounts for equipment. The Corvette in their fleet often shows up at community events, this Mustang seems built for real road work.
